Not sure that I’ve ever been so honored to introduce someone as I am right now.
Gac Filipaj is a refugee from the former Yugoslavia. For the past twelve years, he has worked as a janitor for Columbia University.  His job title is “Heavy Cleaner,” which includes emptying the trash and cleaning the toilets.
During this time, he worked until 11pm every night during the week.  After his shift concluded, he would start studying.  This weekend, after twelve years of study, Gac graduated from Columbia University with a Classics degree.  Rarely have so many qualities I admire been wrapped up in a single person.

Jusepe de Ribera, Ixion, 1632
From the Museo del Prado,

Father to the race of centaurs, Ixion tried to usurp Jupiter’s place in Juno’s bed. His punishment was to eternally turn, tied to a wheel, to expiate his crime. In Ribera’s work, a Satyr has just chained him to the wheel and he makes it turn with the help of another Satyr standing behind it. The latter’s terrible face can be glimpsed in the Tartar’s shadow.Ribera offers us a violent image, with the condemned figure upside down, accentuating the dramatic tension by his use of light, the monumentality of the figures, their forced anatomies and their gestural expressivity.

Laughter

thisisnotpsychology:

Considering how universal laughter is and how much of it we do, there is, relatively, not a lot of research on laughter. One of the main researchers is Robert Provine from University of Maryland. Here is a summary of some of the research he has done… some of these findings may surprise you:
